BASIC COMPUTER SKILLS

This class is for the person using a computer for the first time and also for one who uses a computer but isn't comfortable moving around in the Windows environment.

Skills you will learn: Various terms that are specific to computers; how to use a mouse; what various commands mean; how to deal with the changed appearance of the desktop when you upgraded to a new computer and how to "de-clutter" your desktop.

These classes will cover older versions of Windows as well as the newest. Step-by-step handouts will allow you to practice skills at home.

QUICKBOOKS FUNDAMENTALS

Learn to use Quickbooks to track the finances of a small business. Class topics will include how to set-up a new company, work with customer, vendor, item lists etc., create invoices and process customer payments, work with and reconcile bank and credit card accounts, enter and pay bills, create and use financial reports and more. This class is the 2012 version of Quickbooks. Quickbooks 2014 will be coming in the fall.

BASICS OF COMPUTER NETWORKS

If you have internet access, you most certainly have a computer network in your home. Even if you have just one computer, it is networked with your broadband modem and your router. In this class you will learn the concepts behind alphabet soup such as DHCP, DNS and IP. Some knowledge of these concepts will help you from falling prey to the many scams out there. We will also look at the process of loading a web page to learn some troubleshooting of the dreaded "cannot load page" message. Basic and simple router operation will also be demonstrated. Your instructor is an experienced network technician and administrator and can show you examples for Windows, Mac, smartphones and tablets. Participants are welcome to bring a laptop and follow along, but a computer is not required for this class. Notes will be provided for you to annotate and take home.

MICROSOFT WORD TIPS, TRICKS AND HIDDEN RESOURCES

Word is an incredibly powerful program that will assist you not only with your personal documents, but also on the job. However, finding the commands that help you are often hard to locate.

Skills you will learn: how to save documents; how to create folders; how to set up "Tables" that will help in arranging items in a document; tips, tricks and hidden resources; some current office practices; and the various graphic tools included in the program.

Practice in these classes will be in the most recent version of Word however there will be handouts and discussions covering earlier versions.

Step-by-step handouts will allow you to practice skills at home.

BEGINNER EXCEL 2010 FOR THE HOME

Although Excel is often viewed for business only, it is powerful for personal use as well. People use it for everything from tracking their personal finances to managing birthdays, keeping track of receipts, and tracking their personal health record. If you have Excel on your home computer and don't know what to do with it, this course can introduce you to the spreadsheet and open up new possibilities for organizing your life. Spread your Excel wings! You will probably find it can do a lot more for you than you think.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Windows and comfortable with a keyboard and mouse

BASIC EXCEL 2010 FOR THE OFFICE

How are your Excel skills? Average? Enough to get by? Have you ever thought that with just a little training, you may be able to get your work done faster, and maybe reduce the errors that occasionally sneak in? We'll start at the beginning and learn the screen environment, set up basic spreadsheets, create simple formulas, manipulate your document by adjusting text alignments, changing row/column height widths, format your data with enhancements such as font style, size, color, borders and currency, and preview and print your document. This course aims to 'get you up to speed' and give you an insight into Excel's true potential.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Excel.

EXCEL 2010: BEYOND THE BASICS

This Intermediate Excel 2010 class is meant for those who want to advance their skill set by learning to work with advanced formulas, charts, lists, and illustrations. Students will also work with charts and advanced formatting including styles.

Class Goals:

  • Learn to use formulas and functions.
  • Create and modify charts.
  • Convert, sort, filter, and manage lists.
  • Insert and modify illustrations in a worksheet.
  • Learn to use conditional formatting and styles.

Prerequisite: Basic Excel 2010 for the OFFICE (or equivalent) a must.

CLEANING YOUR WINDOWS COMPUTER

Would you like to know how to make your Windows computer run faster, better & safer? In this class you will learn how to speed up your computer; how to tune up your computer; how to clean up your system; how to organize and archive your files; where to find the tools needed; checking for and repairing damaged files; procedures for troubleshooting common computer problems; how to identify troublesome background programs; and how to update the software for your hardware.

Participants should be knowledgeable in the use of the computer, familiar with the Windows environment and ideally, have completed the Basic Computer class. Bring a notebook and pen or pencil. Step-by-step handouts will allow you to practice skills at home.

POWERPOINT 2010

Want to deliver a powerful presentation that will convey your message with a punch? PowerPoint presentation is the answer. Equipped with the tools and skills of PowerPoint, you can communicate your message in a way that is easily understandable by your audience. PowerPoint is a must-know skill as it provides you with tools to deliver a slide-show presentation without having to actually know how to draw shapes, layouts and designs. You can include videos, images, text, graphics, sound files, etc., to make your presentation beautiful and power-packed.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Windows, basic word processing, and comfortable with a keyboard and mouse.

MAIL MERGE

Are you familiar with Word but know that there are features you're not familiar with? Do you have a large mailing list and wish you knew how to create labels and documents that are less time-consuming? Do you wish you knew how to personalize form letters? Have you heard about Mail Merge, but have no idea how to use it?

Mail Merge is the answer to:

  • Creating mailing lists and from the lists create envelopes, labels and letters
  • Doing this automatically once you set up the list
  • Creating personalized letters, addressed to individuals and possibly containing other information for the recipient
  • Saving time
  • Reducing errors in large mailings
  • Editing large mailings quickly and easily

You can also pull in information from Excel or Access to the Mail Merge document

Step-by-step handouts will allow you to practice skills at home.
